Who is in your Family






Who is in Your Family?
- Families are so important. There are many different types of families from a mom and dad with children to a mom with children or grandparents and their grandchildren.

Materials:
- Pictures of the Watkins family
- Transparences of the Watkins family
- Picture of the teacher’s family
- Paper
- Markers/crayons/colored pencils

Goal: To introduce the students to the Watkins family.
To introduce the students to the concept of family and their own families.

Objective: Given the discussion and information the students will be able to identify and describe their definition of family.

Introduction: (7 minutes)
Open with a discussion about families in general.
“Who makes up your family?”
“What do you think makes a family? Money, people, a house?”
“Who should be in a family?”

Procedure:
1. Show the students picture of the Watkins family either on a transparence or paper. (4 minutes)
2. Explain that the Watkins family was a very important family in the Winona area. (4 minutes)
a. They provided many people with medicine and spices.
b. They built the Manor.
c. Brought business to the region.
3. Show pictures of the teacher’s family. (5 minutes)
a. Where they came from. (ex Germany, Poland)
b. How many brothers and sisters do they have.
c. Living and dead relatives.
d. Diversity in the family.
4. Have the students draw their families. (5 minutes)
5. When the students are done have them come up and briefly describe their picture. (15 minutes)
a.“This is my family at the dinner table.” “This is my family playing softball.”



Closure: (5 minutes)
End with a discussion about families. Is it important that we have different kinds of families? If everyone had the same kind of family the world would be a boring place.

Assessment:
- The students followed the directions by drawing who is in their family to them on the paper.
- Participation in the class discussions.
