Historical Families Around Your Area
Grade 3
- Research the families of the Winona area through materials and information given to the students.
- Make photo/Newspaper article collage
Materials: (originals if possible and photocopies)
- Newspapers of Families in Winona
- Diaries from Families
- Pictures
- Internet connection/computers
- List of Prominent Families
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Construction Paper
Goals:
- To broaden the students’ awareness of the significant historical families in their local area.
- To introduce students to concept of using familiar material to create a scrapbook.
Objective: Given the copied newspapers, photographs, and diaries, the students will create a collage of a family or family member from the Winona area.
Procedure:
1. Briefly remind students about the Watkins family and where they came from. (5 mins)
a. J.R. Watkins was born on August 21st, 1840 and died December 21st, 1911
b. Watkins healings ointments, liniments, vanilla, and spices of all kinds became part of every household across the land.
c. Show transparences with articles and pictures about the Watkins family.
2. Show the students the above material and explain the activity for the day. Have the originals and photocopies already laid out on a table for the students to readily get at them.
a. Break the students up into groups of no more than four.
b. The students will choose one real family from the Winona area (see attached list) and use the materials provide to research the family during the first half of the class period. (15 mins)
c. The students will then, as a group, choose to create a collage of their entire Winona family or a single member of the family. (15 mins)
d. The students may use the class room computer to search the web. They can also take handout materials from the display desk
3. Have the students design and create a collage to represent the real Winona family they have chosen using the glue, tape, scissors, construction paper, and photocopied materials.
4. The students must include at least one picture of the family and two articles related to the family.
Assessments:
- The collages contain more than three different facts or pictures of the family chosen.
- The students share their findings out loud with the class.
